About the Museum
Preserving South Texas Heritage Since 1967
Our History
The Museum of South Texas History was founded in 1967 by a dedicated group of local historians and community leaders who recognized the importance of preserving the unique heritage of South Texas. What began as a small collection housed in the historic Hidalgo County Jail building has grown into a premier regional museum that welcomes thousands of visitors each year.
The original jail building, constructed in 1909, served as the museum's first home and remains an integral part of our campus. This historic structure stands as a testament to early 20th century architecture and the region's law enforcement history. Over the decades, the museum has expanded significantly, adding modern exhibition spaces while carefully preserving the character of the original building.
Today, the museum spans multiple galleries and encompasses thousands of artifacts, photographs, and documents that tell the comprehensive story of South Texas from prehistoric times to the present day.
